چکیده
We review the recently proposed light-cone quantization of the matrix model which is expected to have a critical point describing 2-d quantum gravity coupled to c = 2 matter. In the N → ∞ limit, we derive a linear Schroedinger equation for the free string spectrum. Numerical study of this equation suggests that the spectrum is tachyonic, and that the string tension diverges at the critical point. ⋆ Based on the talk delivered by I. R. Klebanov at the 7th Nishinomiya–Yukawa Memorial Symposium “Quantum Gravity”, November 1992. † On leave of absence from the Rudjer Bošković Institute, Zagreb, Croatia

I review some of the recent progress in two-dimensional string theory, which is formulated as a sum over surfaces embedded in one dimension.
متن کاملLight Cone Quantization of the c = 2 Matrix Model
We study the large N limit of an interacting two-dimensional matrix field theory, whose perturbative expansion generates the sum over planar random graphs embedded in two dimensions. In the light cone quantization the theory possesses closed string excitations which become free as N → ∞. If the longitudinal momenta are discretized, then the calculation of the free string spectrum reduces to fin...

We give a simple derivation of the Virasoro constraints in the Kontsevich model, first derived by Witten. We generalize the method to a model of unitary matrices, for which we find a new set of Virasoro constraints. Finally we discuss the solution for symmetric matrices in an external field. ⋆ Research supported in part by NSF grant PHY90-21984 † E-mail: [email protected]; newman@puhep...
متن کاملStrings with Extrinsic Curvature: An Analysis of the Crossover Regime
In this work, we investigate a theory of fluid, fluctuating random surfaces embedded in three dimensions. Theories of fluctuating surfaces (string theories) have been conjectured to describe a wide variety of physical phenomena and models, including the strong interaction at large distances, the 3d Ising model, and unified theories incorporating gravity. Lipid bilayers and microemulsions are al...

As open N=2 or 4 strings describe self-dual N=4 super Yang-Mills in 2+2 dimensions, the corresponding closed (heterotic) strings describe self-dual un-gauged (gauged) N=8 supergravity. These theories are conveniently formulated in a chiral superspace with general supercoordinate and local OSp(8|2) gauge invariances. The super-light-cone and covariant-component actions are analyzed. Because only...
